American rap superstar Kanye West (now known as Ye) and his designer wife Bianca Censori attended last year’s Grammy Awards, where Bianca unexpectedly removed her clothes and appeared nude on the red carpet, sparking considerable controversy. Recently, Kanye publicly apologized for the first time, revealing that a brain injury had caused issues with his mental health. “I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.”
Kanye published his apology letter in The Wall Street Journal, revealing that a car accident in 2022 resulted in serious after-effects. At the time, he focused on healing broken bones and swelling, neglecting to do a full scan or neurological examination, thus overlooking damage to his frontal lobe, which wasn’t diagnosed until 2023.
Kanye stated, “This medical neglect had severe consequences on my mental health. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The most frightening part of this illness is that it convinces you ‘you don't need help.’ It blinds you, yet makes you believe you have great insight. You feel strong and unstoppable.” Due to bipolar disorder, Kanye’s physical and mental state became extremely chaotic and unstable; during that time, he designed T-shirts featuring Nazi symbols. “I regret my behavior in that state and feel deeply ashamed.” By early 2025, he had been in a severe manic phase for four months, even having suicidal thoughts—“I didn’t want to go on living.”
With his wife's encouragement, Kanye finally accepted treatment and is now taking medication to control his condition. “I will take responsibility, seek treatment, and make meaningful changes. This doesn't excuse what I've done, but I am not a Nazi. I’m not seeking sympathy or absolution, but I hope to be forgiven. This letter is simply a hope for some understanding as I try to find my way home.”
