Sibu: 8 Shops Suddenly Collapse; Firefighters Arrived Before Dawn to Monitor

(Sibu, 13th) – A building collapse involving a row of eight shop lots occurred in downtown Sibu early this morning, when the structures suddenly gave way in the middle of the night. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Command Center, the authorities received a report at 2:46am today about a building collapse along Jalan Hero at Sungai Merah, Sibu, Sarawak.

A team from the Sungai Merah Fire and Rescue Station was immediately dispatched and arrived at the scene at 2:52am to carry out monitoring and assessment operations.

The operation, led by incident commander Sharani, involved six firefighters, along with one fire engine and one emergency medical response vehicle for support. The police were also on site to assist.

The Fire and Rescue Department conducted a preliminary assessment and ground search at the scene, and worked with police to contact each of the relevant shop owners to confirm whether there were any individuals trapped or missing. After a thorough check, it was confirmed that no casualties resulted from the collapse.

After ensuring that the site was safe, firefighters concluded the operation and left the scene at 3:50am.

The specific cause of the building collapse and related property losses are still pending further investigation by the relevant authorities.
