(Bandar Seri Begawan, 22nd) The Royal Brunei Police Force, with the assistance of Miri police, has successfully arrested a foreign national suspected of installing skimming devices on automated teller machines (ATMs) within Brunei.
The suspect was apprehended in Miri. Previously, upon receiving a report from a bank on Sunday, the Bandar Seri Begawan Police Station launched an investigation and, with the cooperation of the Malaysian police, initiated a cross-border law enforcement operation.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to the Royal Brunei Police Force for further investigation and is currently being detained under Section 5 of the Computer Misuse Act (Chapter 194) to assist the investigation.
The police stated that investigations are ongoing to clarify the suspect’s level of involvement, methods of operation, and whether others or any criminal networks are implicated.
The Royal Brunei Police remind the public to remain vigilant when using ATMs, to check if the card slot and keypad have suspicious devices attached, to shield the keypad when entering their PIN, and to regularly check transaction records and account balances.
If any suspicious device, item, or activity is found, the public should avoid using the ATM or touching the suspicious device, and should immediately notify the relevant bank and call 993 to report to the police.
The police emphasized that they take any criminal activity threatening public financial security seriously and will continue to strictly combat such crimes according to the law.
