Kelantan's Transport Facilities Poised to Become Regional Hub Anwar: Can Cater to Both Local & Southern Thai Markets

Malaysian Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar stated that the development of new transportation facilities in Kelantan, Malaysia, is expected to become a strategically significant regional hub, not only meeting high local transportation demand but also tapping into the Southern Thai market.

He said that through proper strategic planning, the establishment of international transport links to major cities such as Singapore, Jakarta, and Bangkok would bring huge spillover benefits to Kelantan.

He said that adopting a more open approach to supporting such transportation development plans would not only benefit the people of Kelantan, but also promote the overall economic growth of the country.

“In addition to meeting the demand for these facilities from the people, this is also a necessary condition for us to enhance economic, trade, and tourism activities.

“If we give Kelantan some attention and focus, its potential will not be marginalized or ignored.”

He said this today at the opening ceremony of the new terminal of Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (LTSIP).

Anwar mentioned that this proactive measure is expected to further promote the local economy and put Kelantan on the right development track in line with national progress.

He praised the close cooperation between the federal and Kelantan state governments for ensuring the smooth progress and successful implementation of the state's strategically important infrastructure project worth RM440 million.

He said that if the cost of the runway extension is included, the total sum of this project is nearly RM5 billion. Despite facing economic constraints when making the decision, it was still allowed to proceed due to its strategic value to the country.

He said that the government always adopts a pragmatic approach when formulating national development plans, and as long as it benefits the people, any differences of opinion will be put aside.

“Although some hold opposing views, we have adopted a very practical approach. When necessary, and as long as negotiations progress smoothly, we will continue to push forward.”

Sultan Ismail Petra Airport – The Most Modern Domestic Airport

Prime Minister Anwar: The development of new transport facilities in Kelantan is expected to become a strategic regional hub, not only meeting high local transportation demand but also catering to the Southern Thai market.
Sultan Ismail Petra Airport (LTSIP) is currently recognized as the nation's most modern and aesthetically pleasing domestic airport.

Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke pointed out that this is because the airport’s phase one enhancement is the latest government project to be completed, while other airports are still undergoing upgrades.

He said in his speech at the opening ceremony of the new LTSIP terminal on Saturday: “So as of now, LTSIP is the most modern and aesthetically pleasing domestic airport in the country.

“Of course, we hope that this airport can be fully utilized, attracting more tourists to Kelantan. At the same time, we hope that this cooperation will continue to benefit the people and the country.”

Anthony Loke also expressed his gratitude to his colleagues in the Ministry of Transport, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the Kelantan state government, contractors, and all units involved in the project.
