KUCHING,8 June: The Kuching Love Book Association will be organising its 16th Blood Donation Campaign on June 15 at Plaza Merdeka’s Ground Floor, from 10 am to 3 pm.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Blood Bank of Sarawak General Hospital and the Malaysian Red Crescent Kuching Branch, aims to address the ongoing shortage of blood supply at the hospital.

According to the Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service Centre, one pack of donated blood, which is separated into components such as red and white blood cells, platelets, plasma, and clotting factors, can be used to treat various medical conditions and benefit three or more patients.

“Eligible donors must be at least 18 years old and weigh a minimum of 45kg, although 17-year-olds may also donate if accompanied by a parent or guardian, with the donation process typically taking between five and 30 minutes depending on the individual’s condition,” it said in a press release today (June 8).

Potential donors are advised to have at least five hours of sleep the night before, eat a proper breakfast, and avoid consuming alcoholic beverages for at least eight hours prior to donating.

As a token of appreciation, the association said the first 80 successful donors will receive a gift pack comprising an eco bag, toothpaste, shopping voucher, two kilogrammes of white rice, rice crackers, fish sticks, biscuits, and bottled water. All donors will also be treated to buns, Milo drinks, and mineral water.

In conjunction with World Blood Donor Day in June, each successful donor will also receive a certificate of appreciation.

Volunteers from the Malaysian Red Crescent Kuching Branch will also conduct public demonstrations on first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of an automated external defibrillator.
