As several large scam camp complexes were shut down, many Chinese citizens who escaped from these parks in Cambodia have recently flocked to queue outside the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia, forming long lines. Some, having lost their passports, are seeking assistance from the Chinese side, hoping to obtain replacement documents before the Spring Festival in order to return home.
Foreign Ministry: Working with Cambodian Side
According to photos released by the “Khmer-China Times,” large crowds have gathered outside the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh. Most of them are Chinese citizens who have escaped from scam camp complexes in Cambodia. According to “JianDanNet,” after several scam parks were busted, many group members were allowed to leave on their own, with tens of thousands leaving the parks and embarking on an uncertain journey home.
Since the 17th, crowds have been queuing outside the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh, and by the 19th, hundreds had formed two lines along the street outside the embassy. Most appeared exhausted and were dressed thinly. Due to lacking their passports, they had to seek a legal way home by applying for proof of return or travel documents.
The Cambodian news website “Cambojanews” quoted several Chinese people in line as saying that they had escaped from scam parks in Sihanoukville and wished to return home before the Lunar New Year, so they came to the embassy for help. However, security personnel at the embassy claimed that only a minority of those in line were members of online scam groups and that the rest were simply applying for tourist visas.
On the 19th, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded that the Chinese government attaches great importance to the safety of Chinese citizens overseas. For some time, China has actively cooperated with Cambodia to crack down on cross-border telecommunications and online fraud, achieving significant results. The Chinese Embassy in Cambodia is maintaining communication and coordination with the Cambodian side and carrying out related work.
