Khamenei's Farewell Ceremony Postponed

Published at Mar 05, 2026 10:57 am
The farewell ceremony for the late Supreme Spiritual Leader Khamenei, originally scheduled to begin on the evening of the 4th, has been postponed. New arrangements will be announced later.

Iranian media reported that the reason for postponing the farewell ceremony is the "unprecedentedly large number" of people expected to come and pay their respects.

Iran had originally planned to hold the farewell ceremony for Khamenei on the evening of the 4th.

The Iranian News Agency (Irna) earlier quoted a statement from the Islamic Development Coordination Council, reporting that starting from 10 p.m. local time on the 4th, farewell ceremonies would be held continuously for three days at the Imam Khomeini Mosque in Tehran.

The "Supreme Spiritual Leader" Will Be Selected "As Soon As Possible"

Iran has already identified several candidates for the position of Supreme Spiritual Leader, and one will soon be selected from among them.

Multiple Iranian media outlets quoted Khatami, a member of the Assembly of Experts, as saying that Iran would select a new Supreme Spiritual Leader "as soon as possible."

Khatami stated that Iran is "in a state of war" at the moment, so the Supreme Spiritual Leader will not be chosen as quickly as last time.

Member of the Assembly of Experts, Hosseini, stated that the Assembly of Experts must convene a meeting to vote, and a candidate must receive at least two-thirds of the votes to be elected Supreme Spiritual Leader.
