(Miri, 19th) Sarawak's Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, stated that Taekwondo is not just a martial art, it's a discipline for physical and mental training. It can cultivate confidence, respect, perseverance, and resilience, all of which are essential values for young people to grow into responsible and capable individuals.
He said that it is also one of the few martial arts competitions in the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games to be held in Los Angeles. The Olympic Council of Malaysia has urged national agencies to train athletes for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Lee Kim Shin expressed this while speaking at the opening ceremony of the second phase of the White Tiger Taekwondo League. As he was unable to attend, his speech was read by City Councilor Dato Lau Sie Nguong.
He pointed out that the league is not just a competitive platform but also a festival of unity, sportsmanship, and cultural diversity. It is gratifying to see participants from different backgrounds coming together with a common passion, showcasing the true power of sports to unite us.
“I am delighted to see the local community, especially young athletes who trained hard for this event, actively participate and enthusiastically support it. Thanks to the association for bringing a healthy and joyful sports event to Miri's students and young people. This is the second time a Taekwondo competition is being held at a shopping center in Miri.”
He also said that the Sarawak government will continue to be committed to supporting the development of grassroots sports. We believe it is crucial to cultivate talent from a young age and create opportunities for our youth to thrive, not only in academics but also in sports and personal development.
“Sarawak has been selected as the host for the 2027 Southeast Asian Games. This is an exciting opportunity for us, and I encourage all athletes to seize this opportunity. This is a golden chance for you to hone your skills and prepare for this grand event. I urge each and every one of you to strive hard and fully dedicate yourself, not just to represent Sarawak, but to bring glory to Sarawak and Malaysia on the international stage.”
He also encouraged the private sector and community leaders to continue working together to develop sports programs that can attract and empower young generations.
“For athletes, I urge you to give it your all, compete with honor, and uphold the true spirit of Taekwondo. Regardless of winning or losing, you are all champions because you stepped onto the stage with courage and determination.”
