Multiple dead pigs have floated down to the waters of Shangjiang Township and Jinjiang Town in Shangri-La, Yunnan, China, and local authorities are still investigating the source.

According to The Beijing News, on Saturday (December 6), a netizen posted a video stating that multiple dead pigs had been found in the Shangjiang Township and Jinjiang Town areas of the Jinsha River, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in Yunnan’s Shangri-La, believed to have drifted down from upstream.

That evening, staff from the government of Jinjiang Town, Shangri-La, Yunnan, stated that the dead pigs found had been buried and destroyed in an environmentally safe way. “We are still working overnight to handle the situation.”

Staff from the comprehensive law enforcement team of Shangjiang Township, Shangri-La, said they had already handled more than 20 dead pigs, and the township is still investigating the source. Observations show both Jinjiang Town and Shangjiang Township have issued notices strictly prohibiting the dumping of diseased or dead livestock and poultry along the river. Violators will be held legally accountable.

According to Jimu News on Wednesday (the 3rd), on the west side of the Jinsha River is Judian Town, Yulong County, Lijiang City. Relevant officials stated that after receiving reports about the dead pigs, they went to the scene and used drones to patrol along the river, discovering five dead pigs that had appeared in the past two to three days, some of which had been washed down from upstream and some discarded by local residents. They have all been retrieved and disposed of harmlessly.

Staff from the Yulong County Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau said: “We do not have swine fever here.”
