Chongqing Landslide Suspected to Be Triggered by Fireworks Factory Explosion

On the morning of the 17th near Wujiang Third Bridge in Hanjia Subdistrict, Pengshui County, Chongqing, China, a landslide occurred, leading to the collapse of houses and people being trapped. According to Xinhua News Agency, 9 trapped individuals have been rescued so far, and none are in life-threatening condition.

According to reports by Elephant News, Ms. Xie Shanshan, a local resident at the scene, said that there is a fireworks factory at the incident location. In the morning, nearby residents heard a loud noise and the sound of rock collapsing, similar to an explosion. This caused the mountainside to collapse, and the landslide continued several times: “After the explosion, the geological structure became loose, and then it continued to collapse one after another.”

According to Ms. Xie's preliminary estimate, about twelve or thirteen houses have collapsed in the landslide, and a passing passenger bus was caught underneath as well.

People online have compared photos of the site before and after the incident, showing the vast area affected by the landslide, with multiple buildings pushed down or covered by the mudslide.
