KMT's Liabilities Exceed NT$2.1 Billion Last Year, Mainly Unpaid Retirement Pensions

Taiwan's opposition Kuomintang (KMT) had total liabilities exceeding NT$2.1 billion (New Taiwan Dollars, same below, RM266 million) last year, mainly consisting of unpaid retirement pensions owed to former staff.

According to reports from Taiwan's United Daily News and SET News, the KMT held its national congress on Saturday (July 25), during which it approved last year's budget statement and property inventory recognition proposals.

Currently, the KMT's total liabilities amount to NT$2,147,390,000, including NT$20 million in short-term loans. The NT$2.1 billion in current liabilities is mainly made up of retirement pensions owed to former staff accumulated over the years.

In the face of continuing financial pressure from the Ill-gotten Party Assets Settlement Committee's pursuit of party assets, KMT Vice Chairman and Secretary General Lee Chien-lung stated in the party-affairs report that, with the upcoming nine-in-one local elections, the KMT has no room to retreat and the party's entire system will enter a state of preparedness immediately.

Last year, the KMT’s actual income was about NT$500 million, with expenditures of NT$510 million, resulting in a deficit of NT$9.12 million. The cumulative deficit at year-end was over NT$1.88 billion.

Lee Chien-lung also mentioned in the party-affairs report that, as of July, around 10,015 people have applied for party membership or reinstatement. In the coming months, the party central must support the local branches, which need to deepen their grassroots reach; under the leadership of KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wen, the party aims for “peaceful prosperity for Taiwan, reform to strengthen the party, unity to secure electoral victory,” and to win the nine-in-one local elections together—laying the foundation for a return to power in 2028.
