Hins Cheung Unfollows Many Celebrity Friends on IG, Admits Mistake for Supporting Umbrella Movement

Published at Apr 12, 2026 01:18 pm
Hong Kong singer Hins Cheung, who previously voiced support for the Sunflower and Umbrella Movements, has suddenly admitted he was wrong, calling it youthful ignorance, expressing deep regret, and announcing that he has joined the Hong Kong government's special rehabilitation "project" for young people involved in the anti-extradition movement as a mentor, planning to lead a team to mainland China. Hins Cheung’s about-face has left many fans quite shocked. Observant netizens also noticed that his IG account unfollowed over a thousand people, including celebrity friends such as Joey Yung and Charlene Choi (Ah Sa).

Wen Wei Po published an exclusive interview with Hins Cheung on the 11th, in which he stated that some of his past remarks and the way he performed his works were inappropriate, leading everyone to question his attitude towards the country and Hong Kong, for which he sincerely apologized. Hins Cheung pointed out that he didn't have a deep understanding of the bigger societal picture at the time, but now he has deeply reflected and regrets his actions, promising not to make the same mistake again and hoping to set a positive example for the younger generation.

Hins Cheung said he was touched after seeing the Hong Kong Security Bureau’s rehab "special project," and wanted to participate personally. So he expressed his intention to the Security Bureau and became one of the mentors and sharers, hoping to encourage young people with his identity as a singer. He also previewed that in the first half of the year, he would personally lead a team to mainland China for exchanges, so that everyone can witness the nation’s prosperity and success. He emphasized that by participating in this project, he hopes to eliminate the doubts society has about him.

Hins Cheung’s drastic change in stance has left many fans very shocked. Netizens further discovered that the night before the report was released, he had unfollowed more than a thousand people on IG, including many celebrity friends like Joey Yung, Ah Sa, Ivana Wong, Kenny Kwan, Leo Ku, and others. However, some netizens pointed out that Cheung may have simply used Instagram’s new “Friend” feature to move some people to the close friends list, rather than actually unfollowing them.

Hins Cheung had previously expressed support for the Sunflower Movement on social media, and joined other Hong Kong artists including Anthony Wong in performing the Cantonese song "Who Hasn't Spoken Out Yet" in support of the Umbrella Movement. He even lost the opportunity to participate in the Chinese variety show "Singer" after being reported online for promoting "Hong Kong independence."
