SARIKEI,19 May: The completion of the long-awaited Sarikei to Tanjung Manis Road and the iconic Batang Rajang Bridge marked a significant milestone for the people of Sarikei and Meradong, bringing far-reaching economic and social benefits.

Sarikei Chinese United Association’s Adviser, Pemanca Chan Phan Chan, attributed the success of this monumental project to the tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii, who is also the Sarikei Member of Parliament and Repok assemblyman.

Chan highlighted that Huang had worked relentlessly to ensure the project’s approval and implementation, taking the people’s needs directly to the government.

The project was formally inaugurated on Sunday after his unwavering dedication, which ultimately won approval from Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“The Batang Rajang Bridge is not just a bridge but a lifeline for local economic growth and improved connectivity.

“This project has significantly enhanced transportation links, facilitated the movement of people and goods, boosted logistics and trade, and upgraded the area’s infrastructure to support future growth,” he said.
He said that the road and bridge project, costing over RM300 million, was fully funded by the Sarawak Government, with construction beginning on April 6, 2019.

Its recent completion has fulfilled a dream long held by people from all walks of life, especially the business community here, who had eagerly awaited improved access to new markets and economic opportunities.

According to Chan, the project’s impact extends beyond infrastructure.

“It is expected to attract more visitors to Sarikei and Meradong, revitalising the local economy and encouraging the growth of various sectors, ultimately improving the prosperity of businesses and communities in the region,” he said.

Chan also recalled the 2016 Sarawak State Election, when Huang contested the Repok seat.

“He is a pragmatic and visionary leader. Since his election in 2016, he has carefully planned and taken concrete steps to turn this vision into reality.

“Though it took nine years from conception to completion, the people of Sarikei and Meradong can now enjoy the fruits of his hard work,” he said.
In concluding his remarks, Chan expressed the local community’s heartfelt gratitude to Huang for his relentless dedication and selfless service.

“His tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed. He has worked without complaint, served with sincerity, and his achievements are now a source of pride for the people of Sarikei and Meradong,” he said.

The completion of the Batang Rajang Bridge stands as a lasting symbol of leadership, commitment and the collective aspirations of a community that never stopped believing in a brighter future.
