(Manila, 12th) — The area around Mindanao, Philippines has experienced over 800 aftershocks within 24 hours following an earthquake. Coastal residents dare not return home, instead sleeping on the streets or in their cars.
On Friday (October 10), Mindanao experienced two strong earthquakes. The quake at 9:43 am reached a magnitude of 7.4, with its epicenter located 20 kilometers off the coast of Manay, Davao Oriental. That evening at 7:12 pm, Davao Oriental experienced another strong quake with a magnitude of 6.9.
According to the Philippine Star, Renato Bacolcol, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, revealed that as of 10 am Saturday (11th), a total of 824 aftershocks had been recorded. Among them, six were above magnitude 5, with the strongest reaching 5.8. One aftershock caused level 4 ground shaking in surrounding areas.
Bacolcol stated that the aftershocks were concentrated in the same area. Typically, after a major earthquake, aftershocks can persist for up to ten days, but their frequency will gradually decrease.
This earthquake has resulted in at least eight deaths, 11 injuries, and more than 8,000 affected people. However, local officials said damage to roads, bridges, schools, and other infrastructure was "minimal," and no reports had been received of missing persons.

In Manay, a city of 40,000 people, residents began post-quake cleanup work on Saturday. One disaster victim said: "Our small houses and shops have all been destroyed, now we have no place to stay. There's no electricity, and nothing to eat."
Other villagers complained they had no money to rebuild their collapsed homes.
Public Works Secretary Diokno, while inspecting the government hospital in Manay, said the government will do its utmost to help the areas affected by the earthquake. This hospital sustained structural damage during the quake, and patients were moved to an open space outside the building.
Recently, the Philippines has been hit by frequent natural disasters. At the end of last month, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Cebu in the central Philippines, killing 75 people and destroying more than 70,000 houses.
