(Kuching, 6th) The Sarawak government recently announced that it will provide a benefit measure of "one year of free insurance for one of the parents" for newborn families, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on families and enhance social security coverage. Datuk Dr. Wu Biao Sheng, President of the Sibu Chinese General Assembly and President of the Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce, has expressed high praise for this, saying that the policy is a people-friendly, commendable initiative that should be promoted.
"Newborn families often face the reality of rising parenting costs, especially in terms of medical expenses. This policy not only provides basic protection for parents but also demonstrates the Sarawak government’s people-oriented governing philosophy. Particularly as the economy gradually recovers post-pandemic, this measure can effectively ease the concerns of families."
Wu Biao Sheng pointed out that the implementation of this policy not only helps alleviate the economic pressure faced by new parents in the early stages of parenting but also raises the public’s awareness and participation in insurance protection, helping to build a safer parenting environment.
He suggested that the Sarawak government should strengthen promotional efforts, especially in rural areas, to ensure that all eligible parents clearly understand the application process. Meanwhile, he also urged relevant insurance companies to simplify procedures to avoid administrative complexity affecting policy implementation efficiency.
"If the scope of protection could be further expanded or the insurance period extended, it would be even more beneficial, truly realizing a people-oriented social policy."
Additionally, he emphasized that such social welfare policies should ensure long-term sustainability. He suggested that the effectiveness of the policy be evaluated in the future and optimized based on parental feedback, such as incorporating early childhood medical protection or educational savings plans, to further enhance the development environment for the next generation in Sarawak.
"Amid rising prices and the increasing weight of parenting costs, the government’s proactive step to offer free insurance for newborn families is a forward-looking social investment, fully reflecting the importance attached to family welfare," he said.
He urged relevant government departments to promptly announce the detailed contents of the insurance plan, including the scope of coverage, eligibility, and application procedures, and to publicize widely through major media platforms to ensure all eligible families can benefit smoothly, especially residents in remote areas.
Finally, Wu Biao Sheng expressed his strong support for the Sarawak government to continue introducing policies that contribute to social stability and family development, while encouraging the business community and civil groups to cooperate and support within feasible ranges, working together to build a warmer, more secure Sarawak.
