(Miri, 26th) – In an effort to curb street racer gangs causing disturbances at night, the Miri police carried out a 'Street Racing Crackdown Operation' from the night of October 25th to the early morning of the 26th, confiscating a total of 18 modified motorcycles and issuing 82 traffic summonses.
According to a statement released today by Miri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Lee Bing Chiang, the operation was led by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Unit, involving two officers and five personnel. It was conducted from 11pm to 4am on major roads around the city, including Miri city roads, Piasau Road, Bulatan Melayu Road, Miri Bypass, and Coastal City roads.
The operation aimed to combat illegal racing and motorcycle modifications, ensuring road users obey traffic regulations and safeguarding public safety and order.
During the operation, a total of 33 vehicles were inspected, of which 18 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 due to structural modifications or the need for further inspection.
In addition, 45 local individuals were checked—42 males and 3 females aged between 18 and 27. Five of the men were taken to the Narcotics Unit of the Miri District Police for urine screening, which showed none were involved in any drug use.
The police issued a total of 82 PDRM(K)257 traffic summonses for various traffic violations.
Assistant Commissioner Lee Bing Chiang emphasized that the police will continue to conduct similar operations, reminding riders and drivers to drive safely, not to participate in illegal racing or make unauthorized modifications to vehicle structures, and not to gather by the roadside causing noise and traffic obstructions so as not to endanger themselves or other road users.
He also urged the public that if they have any information on 'street racer gang' activities, they can contact the Miri District Police Operations Room immediately (Tel: 085-433400).
