Bintulu Port Company Committed to Strengthening Digital Transformation, Aiming to Become a Fully Digital Port by 2030

(Kuching, 12th) Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad is committed to strengthening the digital transformation of its operations, with the goal of becoming a fully digital port by 2030.

The company’s CEO, Dato Roselan Abdul Ghani, stated that over the past three years, in order to keep up with global technological development, the company has implemented a number of strategic measures to modernize its port operation systems.

He said the initial steps began with the implementation of the “smart gate” system equipped with vehicle license plate recognition technology, thereby improving the efficiency of vehicle traffic in and out of the port.

“At present, we are installing the port operation system used by the Shanghai Port, including the system adopted in Yangshan Phase 4. This system can realize full integration of operations and provide more advanced and efficient working methods for customers and management.”

He said this last night at the 2026 Bintulu Port Media Recognition Dinner in Kuching, in an interview with the media.

He added that Bintulu Port has also introduced maritime systems for more systematic vessel management and has enhanced security monitoring by installing CCTV and using drone technology.

"We have already started using drones, including the 'nested drone' concept, and Bintulu Port is the first port in Malaysia to adopt this technology."

Speaking of the latest developments, he revealed that the port operation system has been implemented at Samalaju Industrial Port since last September, and it is expected to be fully completed at Bintulu Port by April this year.

In addition, the company is currently developing “digital twin” technology for port operations.

If this can be realized soon, Bintulu Port is expected to become one of the earliest ports in Malaysia to apply this technology.

In other developments, he, who also serves as the Group CEO of Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad, explained that because the port’s trade does not heavily depend on the US market, Bintulu Port has so far not been directly affected by global economic uncertainties, including issues regarding US tariffs.

On the contrary, its main trading partners are China, Japan, and several European countries, and most of the products handled at the Samalaju Industrial Port are exported to East Asian markets such as China and Japan.

“If these countries are affected by US tariffs, we might be indirectly affected. But looking at the past year, we have not seen any major impact on port operations.”
