(Kuching, 11th) Batu Lintang assemblyman Sii Chee Hao fully supports Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Professor Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, who recently announced that the Sarawak government will discuss amending the Sarawak Building Ordinance with the State Legal Office through his ministry, to legislate the mandatory installation of Automated External Defibrillators (AED) in all future public buildings in Sarawak.
According to the proposed amendment, public places such as badminton courts, tennis courts, football fields, and shopping malls must be equipped with AEDs in the future to save lives in emergencies.
Sii Chee Hao said that not only should AEDs be installed in key locations, but the public should also understand and master the correct usage methods. “Only when AEDs are easily accessible and someone knows how to use them can their presence truly play a role in emergency rescue.”
He pointed out that installing AEDs, training the public in the correct use of AEDs, and encouraging the learning of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) are three approaches that together comprise an effective long-term life safety plan.
He also suggested that the government should provide certain subsidies to institutions or entities installing AEDs in public places, to encourage the private sector to participate, so that more private locations can be equipped with AEDs for emergency use. Currently, a set of AEDs certified by the Malaysian Ministry of Health costs about RM6,000.
Yesterday morning, Sii Chee Hao was invited to attend as guest of honor and gave a speech at the “AED Donation Ceremony and CPR Seminar” held at the Pending Waterfront Kuching Community Association Hall.
The event was organized by the Kuching Pending Waterfront Community Association Table Tennis Group and co-organized by the Malaysian Red Crescent Siburan Chapter, aiming to promote community first aid knowledge and compassionate education.
Guests attending the event included Phang How Chuen, Table Tennis Group Director of the Kuching Pending Waterfront Community Association; Penghulu Yan Ang Kang; Datuk Penghulu Beh Chao Hing; Chiew Kim Soon, Manager of the Malaysian Red Crescent Siburan Chapter; representatives from NUTRIGOLD; committee members of various groups and units under the Kuching Pending Waterfront Community Association; Malaysian Red Crescent Siburan Chapter office bearers and members; and community residents, among others.
