(Bandar Seri Begawan, 23rd) The Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) has clarified that information circulating on social media regarding two local residents committing armed robbery, currently hiding in a hotel and being pursued by the police, is completely false and untrue. The RBPF stated that they have yet to receive any reports or complaints related to this matter, and have launched an investigation to identify the source of the rumor. Disseminating identification documents of involved individuals widely on social media without any substantiated basis is considered an irresponsible act.
Such actions not only harm the dignity and well-being of the defamed individuals, but may also disrupt public order.
The Royal Brunei Police Force calls on the public not to spread any information that has not been officially verified and to always verify the authenticity of any information before sharing it. The PPDB reminds that spreading false information is a criminal offence and may be prosecuted under Section 500 of the Penal Code (Chapter 22) and Section 34 of the Public Order Act (Chapter 148). Upon conviction, offenders may face imprisonment and/or fines.
