Homes destroyed by fire, while searching for temporary shelter, victims of the Putra Heights gas explosion are still being asked by landlords to pay a deposit of two to three months, making their lives even more difficult.

During an inspection of the temporary evacuation center for the Putra Heights gas explosion, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution told the media that while various parties are providing assistance to the victims, they still face landlords who are asking for a two to three-month rental deposit when renting temporary accommodation.

He said that as these victims are already under the pressure of the disaster, requiring them to pay a rental deposit surely makes their lives even harder.

“Most of the victims are still looking for a place to live, some have found one, but landlords are asking for two... three months' deposit.”

“While they face challenges, the government is providing help, yet some landlords operate as usual... this makes their (victims’) days difficult.”

On the other hand, Saifuddin pointed out that the National Registration Department, through the People’s Love Sowing Plan (MEKAR), is reissuing documents for 443 victims, including 172 identity cards, 249 birth certificates, 7 marriage certificates, 1 death certificate, and so on.

He said that as of now, there are still 361 victims from 95 families remaining in the temporary evacuation center.

Earlier, Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin announced that the state government will cover the victims’ rent, amounting to a total of RM7,356,000.

The state government will provide each tenant with RM2,000 in rent for up to 6 months.
