At Least 1 Dead and 4 Injured in Major Quake in the Philippines, Police: Multiple Buildings Collapsed

A strong earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines on the 8th, with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measuring a magnitude of 7.8. Police reported that the powerful quake has caused at least one death and four injuries, with 'multiple buildings collapsed.'

According to reports from various foreign news agencies, the USGS stated that the epicenter was located about 24 kilometers west of Sarangani Province on Mindanao Island, at a depth of 35 kilometers.

Police in General Santos City, South Cotabato Province, said that many buildings in the area were damaged, some homes also collapsed, and they confirmed at least one death and four injuries.

An official from the local disaster agency in Davao City, the capital of Mindanao, stated that authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and will release the latest information through social media.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated after the earthquake that certain coastal areas of the Philippines could experience tsunamis up to 3 meters high. Parts of the coastlines of Indonesia and Malaysia could see waves up to 1 meter high.

Earlier, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had said that coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea could experience tsunami waves 'within the next 3 hours.'

Japanese authorities separately issued a tsunami advisory for large areas along the Pacific coast, estimating that starting from 11:30 a.m. Japan time (10:30 a.m. Malaysia time), various regions could experience waves up to 1 meter high.

Residents in Indonesia's North Sulawesi Province and North Maluku Province also felt the quake.
