(Bandar Seri Begawan, 14th) The Department of Industry and Business Ecosystem (IBE) under the Ministry of Finance and Economy Brunei, through the Unit of Weights and Measures (SDT), recently conducted mobile measurement instrument inspection services at three markets: Kianggeh Market (Tamu Kianggeh), Selayun Farmers' Market (Pasar Tani Selayun), and Gadong Market (Pasar Gadong).
This service is a continuous initiative aimed at ensuring consumer rights are protected through a simple, efficient, and customer-centric approach, promoting transparent and fair business practices. The service ensures that all measurement instruments used for commercial trade comply with the relevant provisions of Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act 1983 and the 1994 Research Regulations.
According to statistics, a total of 173 sets of measurement instruments were registered during this service. SDT reminds all vendors and users of weighing and measuring instruments to comply with Section 3(2) of the 1994 Weighing and Measuring Instruments (Research) Regulations: It is illegal to use scales, balances, or other weighing instruments for transactions without an officially affixed inspection seal.
Violators can be fined up to BND 1,000, face imprisonment for 3 months, or both; the illegally used instruments will be confiscated, and any contracts, transactions, sales, or commercial activities involved will be deemed invalid.
If the public has any questions related to weights and measures, they can consult the SDT department via email at sdt@mofe.gov.bn or by calling 2383142.
