Recently, the weather in the Laohugou area of Menyuan County, Haibei Prefecture, Qinghai Province, Mainland China became severe. Rescue personnel were conducting searches and assisting climbers to evacuate, among whom one Taiwanese citizen died. The Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) confirmed the information, stating that the family is flying to Mainland China on the afternoon of the 9th to handle the aftermath.
On the 9th, the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) explained that regarding the death of a Taiwanese citizen in Laohugou, Qinghai Province on the 6th, they received a call from a company on the 7th informing them that an employee stationed in Mainland China had gone hiking during the holiday, experienced discomfort on the way, and encountered heavy snow. The person unfortunately died due to altitude sickness and hypothermia, and the company inquired about follow-up arrangements.
SEF stated that after receiving the appeal, they immediately explained to the company the relevant procedures for document verification, ashes customs clearance, and subsequent arrangements. They also consulted with the Xining Taiwanese Business Association to help confirm the situation with the local Taiwan Affairs Office.
SEF pointed out that, according to their understanding, the family boarded a flight to Mainland China on the afternoon of the 9th and, after meeting with company personnel, is heading to Qinghai. SEF will maintain contact with the family and has requested the Xining Taiwanese Business Association to provide necessary assistance locally.
According to Red Star News, a Mainland Chinese media outlet, on the 8th, rescue personnel continued rescue operations from the 5th to the 7th. As of 12:20 p.m. on the 7th, 251 climbers had been safely evacuated. One Taiwanese citizen died due to altitude sickness and hypothermia, while the remaining persons have all been properly settled.
