(Paris, 13th) On the 12th, French President Macron stated on social media that France and the European Commission are firmly united in strongly opposing the United States' announcement to impose a 30% tariff on exports from the European Union starting August 1.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Macron wrote that, in the spirit of European solidarity, the European Commission should demonstrate the EU’s firm determination to defend its own interests. If the US and Europe cannot reach an agreement by August 1, the EU should mobilize all available tools, including the anti-coercion mechanism, to accelerate preparations for “credible countermeasures.” France supports the Commission in intensifying negotiations with the US in hopes of reaching a mutually acceptable agreement before August 1.
On the 12th, US President Trump announced that, starting August 1, the US will impose 30% tariffs on goods imported from the EU and Mexico. Trump claimed that the EU’s tariffs and non-tariff trade barriers have resulted in a huge US trade deficit with Europe, and that the relationship between the two sides is “far from mutually beneficial.”
European Commission President von der Leyen responded that the US’s imposition of a 30% tariff on EU exports would disrupt important transatlantic supply chains and harm businesses and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic. The EU will take all necessary measures to defend its own interests, including reciprocal countermeasures if necessary. The EU has always sought to resolve issues with the US through negotiations and remains willing to continue efforts to reach an agreement before August 1. Meanwhile, the EU will continue to deepen global partnerships and firmly uphold a rules-based international trading system.
