US President Trump stated on the 10th that the EU's decision to suspend countermeasures against US tariffs for 90 days is a 'very wise' decision.
During a White House cabinet meeting, Trump said, 'They (the EU) were prepared to announce countermeasures, but then they found out what we were doing with China and other countries... then they said, 'Why don’t we wait and see first.’'
Trump also criticized the EU again, saying they 'were looking to take advantage of the US from the start.'
EU Suspends Tariff Countermeasures Against the US
After Trump announced the suspension of 'reciprocal tariffs' on more than 75 countries except China, the EU immediately announced a 'pause' on countermeasures against Trump's tariffs for 90 days.
On the 10th, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on social platform X, 'We note President Trump's decision to suspend some tariffs. We hope to create opportunities for negotiations.'
She pointed out that the 27 EU member states had planned to launch a second round of countermeasures within the week in response to the US imposing a comprehensive 20% tariff on cars and other European products. However, following Trump's announcement of the suspension, the EU decided to press the 'pause button' as well.
She emphasized, 'If the negotiations do not yield a satisfactory result, our countermeasures will be immediately implemented. All options remain on the table.'
Meanwhile, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic immediately engaged in discussions with US Commerce Secretary Ross and US Trade Representative Lighthizer.
He stated that the EU maintains 'daily communication and close contact' with the US to create conditions that 'move the negotiations forward.'
