(Miri, 13th) To curb the increasing number of invasive iguanas, authorities have further strengthened control operations, and conducted a nighttime operation at the artificial lake park last night (August 12), capturing another 8 iguanas.
With the launch of this latest operation, the total number of iguanas captured through a series of control operations since April this year has risen to 57, highlighting the need for continued monitoring and intervention measures to prevent further spread of this non-native species.
This operation started at 8:00 PM and ended around 10:30 PM, jointly carried out by Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Miri City Council.
The action was led by Sarawak wildlife control officers, with Miri City Councillor Yu Chong Ming representing the Mayor of Miri in attendance.
The focus of the operation was to locate and safely capture iguanas around the artificial lake park area, which authorities have been continuously monitoring for iguana activity.
Previously, operations carried out in April, from June 10th to 12th, and on July 21st, resulted in the capture of 49 iguanas.
The authorities urge the public to report any iguana sightings to the relevant departments, so that appropriate and safe control measures can be taken.
