Trump Threatens Cuba: Urges Quick 'Deal' with the US

Published at Jan 12, 2026 11:09 am
(USA, 12th) US President Donald Trump on the 11th once again exerted pressure on Cuba, threatening that if Cuba does not 'reach an agreement' with the US soon, it will face a situation of 'zero oil, zero capital' flowing into the country.

He posted on the social media platform Truth Social, saying that for many years Cuba has relied on large amounts of oil and money from Venezuela, but “there will be no more oil or funds flowing to Cuba—zero!”

He said: "I strongly advise them (to reach an agreement with the US) before it’s too late."

He pointed out that Venezuela is now being protected by the United States, which has the most powerful military in the world (so far!).

Nevertheless, Trump did not specify what kind of agreement he wants Cuba to reach.

In response to the US’s threatening remarks, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said on the 11th that Cuba is a free, independent, and sovereign country, and "those who treat everything as business, even trading in human lives, have no right to lecture Cuba."

He posted on social media that Cuba will not accept being dictated to by anyone, the Cuban people have chosen their own political path, and some people are therefore "beside themselves with anger" and attacking Cuba.

He said that some people blame Cuba’s economic difficulties on the revolution, and they should be ashamed. In fact, these people know that the current hardship is caused by the extreme blockade and suppression implemented by the US against Cuba for more than 60 years, which is worsening.

He emphasized that Cuba will never initiate attacks or threats against any country, but is always prepared to defend every inch of its territory.
