White House Press Secretary Levitt stated at a White House press conference on the 23rd that if Saudi Arabia does not join the 'Abraham Accords', the recently signed US-Saudi civilian nuclear agreement will be voided.
On the 22nd, the energy departments of the United States and Saudi Arabia each issued statements announcing that the two countries had signed a cooperation agreement on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. However, earlier on the 23rd, US President Trump stated on social media that the agreement would be approved only on the condition that Saudi Arabia joins the 'Abraham Accords'. This prerequisite was not mentioned in the previous statements issued by the US and Saudi Arabia.
While answering reporters' questions, Levitt reiterated Trump's latest condition, saying that whether the agreement comes into effect depends on Saudi Arabia signing the 'Abraham Accords,' and emphasized that the president is always the final decision-maker.
She said that Trump had communicated with the Saudi side on this matter multiple times, hoping to see Saudi Arabia join the 'Abraham Accords' as soon as possible.
Levitt also stated that after Trump raised the new condition, he had not yet spoken with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed. During Mohammed's visit to the White House last November, Trump strongly requested Saudi Arabia to join the 'Abraham Accords' but was rejected. Crown Prince Mohammed bluntly stated that due to the ongoing Gaza conflict, anti-Israel sentiment in Saudi Arabia is high, and at present, normalization of relations with Israel will not be accepted.
The 'Abraham Accords' are agreements brokered by Trump during his first presidential term, normalizing relations between the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco, and Israel. Trump has always regarded this as an important diplomatic achievement.
