The White House released a statement on the 14th, announcing that starting from the 15th, in response to national security threats, a 25% ad valorem import tariff will be imposed on certain imported semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and derivatives.

The US will impose a 25% tariff on certain advanced computing chips, such as the NVIDIA H200 and AMD MI325X. This tariff does not apply to chips imported to support the construction of US technology supply chains and to strengthen domestic semiconductor derivative manufacturing capabilities.

In the statement, President Trump said that, based on the recommendation of the US Secretary of Commerce, the US will continue negotiations in the first phase with foreign authorities that have the potential to enhance the US semiconductor industry. At the same time, a 25% ad valorem tariff will be immediately imposed on a small portion of imported semiconductors, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and their derivatives, which are an important part of US AI and technology policy.

The statement indicated that after the completion of relevant negotiations, in the second phase, the US will impose significant tariffs on a broader range of imported semiconductors. The Secretary of Commerce also recommended launching a tariff offset mechanism to grant preferential tariff treatment to companies investing in US semiconductor production and supply chains.

In early August 2025, Trump previously declared that the US would impose a 100% tariff on imported semiconductor products.
