(Mendangau, 12th) — Five individuals involved in a brawl incident that went viral on social media, including three men and two women, were arrested by police the day before yesterday to assist in the investigation of the case that occurred in Mendangau city center.
Maradong District Police Deputy Superintendent Tansli Mering stated that on August 11, officers from the Criminal Investigation Division (BSJD) of the Maradong District Police, assisted by Motorcycle Patrol Unit (MPV) officers, arrested the five individuals.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the five suspects knew each other and were friends before the incident.
In a statement issued today, he pointed out that the investigation found this group believed to have gathered to drink alcohol inside a rented room behind a beverage shop in Mendangau, after which a dispute broke out among them.
Tansli said the incident is believed to have started at around 5pm on August 10, when two people began to argue, and one person then tried to intervene and mediate the conflict.
He said the situation subsequently escalated, and a Perodua Kancil believed to be preparing to leave the scene was stopped due to a misunderstanding.
"The dispute then developed into a physical conflict, and one of the men is believed to have been assaulted, while the vehicle was also struck.
"To prevent the situation from worsening, those inside the car decided to leave the scene."
He said preliminary investigation also found that all people involved were believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time; as of now, no one has lodged a police report regarding this incident.
Tansli stated that all the suspects are currently being detained under Section 23 of the Criminal Procedure Code for preventive detention and are being held at the Mendangau Police Station detention cell to assist further investigation.
"The police are still conducting a full investigation to clarify the facts, and will take further action after the investigation is completed. The police urge the public not to speculate or spread unverified information and to allow the police to handle the investigation."
