On the 20th, Thai Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin presided over the first meeting of the National Committee for the Prevention and Control of Technology-Related Crimes at the Prime Minister's Office, focusing on the issue of combating telecom fraud. Multiple cabinet members and senior officials from relevant security agencies attended the meeting.
At the press conference held after the meeting, Anutin stated that telecom fraud activities have seriously damaged the country's reputation and that "combating telecom fraud" should be formally included in the national agenda. It will be submitted to the Cabinet meeting on October 21, requiring all ministries to fully work together to tackle the issue.
Anutin pointed out that although various departments have recently carried out their own efforts and made progress, including cracking several cases and freezing over ten billion baht in assets involved in the cases, the current situation is not satisfactory. All departments must strengthen law enforcement and increase efforts in the crackdown.
Anutin said the government is preparing to set up a special investigation body, jointly led by the National Anti-Money Laundering Office, the Royal Thai Police, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, and the Ministry of Interior, and to invite the prosecutor's office, the Ministry of Commerce, the Department of Special Investigation, and other units to join, in order to form a cross-departmental synergy. The National Security Council has already authorized the relevant departments that, for any telecommunications fraud activity, the supply of signal, electricity, or energy support can be immediately suspended without the need for step-by-step approval.
