(Singapore, 27th) A China-registered bulk carrier departing from Guangzhou sank in the Pearl River Estuary after a collision with a Singapore-registered container ship, leaving two crew members missing.
According to a statement released on Sunday (October 26) by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the collision occurred on Saturday (25th) at around 8 PM Singapore time. The vessels involved were the Singapore-registered container ship WAN HAI A17 Xichun, operated by Wan Hai Lines, and the China-registered bulk carrier HAI LI 5.
According to information provided by Wan Hai Lines, the condition of the container ship is stable, none of the 23 crew members were injured, and the incident did not result in sea pollution.
The bulk carrier sank after the accident; out of 15 crew members, 13 were rescued and two are missing. The relevant Chinese authorities have launched search and rescue operations.
The container ship is currently docked at port, and its crew are assisting Chinese authorities with the investigation.
According to Taiwanese media reports, the Xichun, with a total carrying capacity of about 145,000 tons, is approximately 18 times larger than the sunken bulk carrier. Xichun was preparing to enter Guangzhou’s Nansha Port at the time of the incident.
The Maritime and Port Authority has contacted Wan Hai Lines and Chinese authorities to provide necessary assistance. The authority will also conduct an investigation.
