(Shanghai, 12th) A private company from Sarawak signed a cooperation agreement with China's Fudan University yesterday to initiate the establishment of a comprehensive medical research center, which will be located in Miri's "Sand Bond Smart City."

Dr. Datuk Amar Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Chief Minister of Sarawak and Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, stated that Fudan University is one of the two top universities in China accredited with an A-grade in comprehensive medicine, and is also among the top 50 universities globally.

He pointed out that this initiative will be conducted in three phases. The first phase is to establish the Fudan Southeast Asia Institute of Comprehensive Medicine Miri Campus, the second phase is to set up the Fudan University Medical School Miri Campus, and the third phase is to establish the Fudan University Miri Campus.

"We will continue to negotiate with Fudan University to strive to turn this effort into reality. The Sarawak government delegation is deeply gratified by the positive development of this plan and thanks the Malaysian Consulate General in Shanghai for their significant assistance in facilitating multiple discussions."

He said this after attending the "Joint Research Center for the Development of Innovative Medicine Combining Chinese and Western Medicine Cooperation Agreement Signing Ceremony" held at Fudan University, as interviewed by the Sarawak Public Relations Unit (UKAS) reporters.

The agreement was signed by Fudan University Vice President Ma Yugang and Allied Sarawak Group President Zhang Zu De, while Fudan University President Professor Jin Li also attended to witness.

Datuk Amar Sim Kui Hian further noted that the senior leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Government and Fudan University also expressed strong support for this three-phase cooperation plan.

He explained that the establishment of this medical university will help address the current shortage of doctors in Sarawak.

He said Sarawak currently needs about 2,000 more doctors to improve the quality of medical services, especially as the state faces an aging population.

"We still lack 2,000 doctors in Sarawak, and we need universities like Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and other medical schools to train more doctors. I hope this new medical school can help us address the aging population issue while promoting greater autonomy in medical and educational fields."

Accompanying guests included Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, President of the Sarawak Federation of Chinese Associations Datuk Huang Liang Jie, and Acting Consul General of Malaysia in Shanghai Nurul Atira Hani.

Earlier, Sim Kui Hian and the Sarawak government delegation also visited the Fudan University Science and Innovation Museum and the Fudan University History Museum, and held a closed-door meeting with the university's senior officials.

During the visit, they also listened to briefings on Fudan University's research achievements in satellite technology, artificial intelligence, and industrial net-zero emissions.
