August 6, 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima City's "Atomic Bomb Day." The Hiroshima city government will hold a commemorative ceremony at the Peace Memorial Park within the city. This year, representatives from approximately 120 countries and regions, as well as the European Union, are attending—surpassing the record of 111 countries and regions in 2023.
It is reported that this year, Hiroshima City did not "specifically select and invite" foreign representatives, but rather "notified" all countries and regions that the event would be held. Taiwan is sending a representative (Taiwan's Representative to Japan, Lee I-Yang) for the first time.
On August 6, 1945, the U.S. military dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, resulting in about 140,000 deaths. According to the Hiroshima city government, this year marks the first time that Taiwan and Palestine are taking part in the Peace Memorial Ceremony. Russia, as with last year, will not attend. Among the other nuclear-armed countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and India have sent representatives. China, Pakistan, and North Korea are not on the attendance list.
