Crashed Into Six Cars, 24-Year-Old Man Charged in Court

(Sibu, 18th) A 24-year-old local man was brought before the Sibu Magistrates’ Court yesterday, charged with reckless and dangerous driving at a local traffic light intersection on the 13th of this month, resulting in a collision with six other vehicles.
Sibu District Acting Chief Boniface Bajai Superintendent stated that the accused was charged before Magistrate Oon Kork Chern and pleaded not guilty after hearing the charges under Section 42(1) of the 1987 Road Transport Act.
He said: "The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Keshava Rao Therma Raja. At the time of the incident, the accused was driving a Toyota Vios on Huang Shun Kai Road."
"According to preliminary investigations, the vehicle allegedly failed to stop when approaching the traffic light intersection and subsequently crashed into six other vehicles that were waiting to proceed." he stated in the press release.
He reported that all vehicles involved in the accident sustained serious damage at the front and rear.
He said that some victims suffered only minor injuries and received treatment at the scene.
"Police and local security forces quickly controlled traffic to ensure the situation did not deteriorate further."
"The court approved bail for the accused at RM5,000, requiring two local guarantors, and set the next mention date for May 21." he said.
Previously, a local man was arrested by police to assist with the investigation, for allegedly crashing into six other cars while driving on the same road section.
Boniface Bajai noted that police received a report of this seven-vehicle accident at about 9:55 PM.
"Preliminary urine test results showed the driver tested positive for amphetamines. Police have launched an investigation under Section 42(1) of the 1987 Road Transport Act, namely, reckless and dangerous driving on public roads."
"If convicted, the driver involved can be sentenced to imprisonment for no more than five years, and fined between RM5,000 and RM15,000, with his driving license suspended for no less than two years," he said.
