The Hong Kong SAR Government stated on the 28th that it welcomes the passage of the "2025 Aircraft Passenger Departure Tax (Amendment) Bill" by the Legislative Council of the Special Administrative Region on the same day, implementing the suggestion from the fiscal budget for the 2025/2026 financial year, to increase the aircraft passenger departure tax from HKD 120 (MYR 64.8) per passenger to HKD 200 (MYR 108), and it is expected that government revenue could increase by about HKD 1.6 billion (MYR 864 million) annually. The new tax rate applies to tickets purchased on or after October 1, 2025.
According to reports by Xinhua News Agency, a spokesperson for the SAR Government stated that in considering the increase in aircraft passenger departure tax, the government has balanced between increasing revenue and reducing the impact on passengers. The impact of the increase on the overall travel expenses of aircraft passengers (including travelers) is very slight.
The approved "2025 Aircraft Passenger Departure Tax (Amendment) Bill" will be gazetted on June 6.
