World-renowned economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs highly praises Malaysia's Prime Minister Dato' Sri Anwar for the leadership he has shown during his tenure as the 2025 ASEAN rotating chair.
He said that Anwar's approach to resolving the Myanmar crisis is constructive and aligns with ASEAN's collective vision.
He stated that Malaysia's proactive approach does not constitute interference, but rather responsibly utilizes diplomatic means to promote peace and stability in the ASEAN region.
"I believe that ASEAN leadership is striving to ensure regional peace, which is an extremely important and constructive initiative. This is not the kind of 'interference' we should oppose."
Sachs, who is also a professor at Columbia University in the United States and chair of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, spoke to the media today (27th) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre after attending the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit.
He praised Anwar for actively addressing the Myanmar issue as ASEAN chair, describing Anwar as an outstanding leader who effectively uses his position to drive solutions within ASEAN.
"I strongly support what Anwar is currently doing."
When asked whether ASEAN should consider reforming its long-standing non-interference principle in the context of the Myanmar crisis, Sachs did not propose specific changes to the policy but emphasized the global trend towards enhanced regional cooperation.
He added that as countries face uncertainty and pressure, including from major powers like the United States, ASEAN's growing diplomatic role regionally and globally is very important.
"In such a contextual background, a strong ASEAN is extremely important, and true leadership within ASEAN is also crucial. Anwar is showcasing this leadership this year. His chairmanship is very successful."
He also mentioned recent regional meetings, including the 46th ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council Summit, and the ASEAN-Gulf-China Dialogue meeting, reflecting Malaysia's effective leadership and ASEAN’s commitment to unity and cooperation.
