(Miri, 15th) – Sarawak Minister of Transport, Lee Kim Shin, stated that the Sarawak Government has always placed great importance on the development of arts, culture and sports, as culture not only shapes social identity but also brings people together; and sports not only strengthen the body, but also cultivate personal character. He hopes that in the future, more young people will engage with dragon and lion dance culture, allowing this traditional art to shine anew in the modern era.

He made these remarks while attending the 2026 Bing Wu Year of the Horse Cultural Gala hosted by the Wei Sheng Sports Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe at Star City Plaza last night, where he also officiated the dotting of the dragon’s eyes opening ceremony.

He said that dragon and lion dance culture is an extremely representative form of art in traditional Chinese culture, symbolizing auspiciousness, unity, and striving for progress. Every beat of the drum and every leap of the dragon and lion not only showcases a combination of strength and beauty, but also carries the persevering spirit of cultural heritage passed down through generations.

He praised the Wei Sheng Sports Association Dragon and Lion Troupe for their deep involvement in the community over the years, actively nurturing the younger generation. He noted that they are not only a performance troupe, but also an important platform for promoting cultural education, preserving the precious cultural roots of Miri and Sarawak.

Lee pointed out that dragon and lion dance culture attracts participants and appreciation from different ages and ethnicities, embodying Sarawak’s unique characteristics of multiculturalism, mutual respect, and growing together. Culture continues to develop through exchange and understanding.

He also mentioned that this year is the Bing Wu Year of the Horse, symbolizing progress and perseverance; and the unyielding spirit displayed by the dragon and lion troupes through their long-term training echoes perfectly with the symbolism of the Year of the Horse. He believes that as long as the spirit of dedication and cultural heritage persists, the dragon and lion troupes will continue to grow and bring more positive energy to society.

In addition, he noted that a short film based on a true story was screened at the cultural gala, telling the story of a youth from an underprivileged family who worked hard to pursue his dreams despite challenges in further education, highlighting the importance of education in changing lives.

He said the Sarawak Government's free university education policy aims to ensure that Sarawak youths with ambition do not miss educational opportunities due to family financial background, providing a secure platform for young people to pursue their dreams and creating more equitable development opportunities.

He called on society, schools, associations, and government to join hands to create broader development opportunities for the next generation.
