(Kuala Lumpur, 23rd) The Malaysia International Search and Rescue Organization (MISAR) reminds all parties that sinkholes are different from the frequent floods during the rainy season—their danger lies hidden like a "time bomb" that could go off at any moment.
K. Balasubramaniam said that sinkholes can be triggered by small water pipe bursts and may suddenly occur under the scorching sun during dry seasons.
"When a small pothole appears, it signals the formation of a bigger one. Even just a small water pipe rupture is enough to cause a sinkhole."
"Even with a small hole about 6 inches wide, it can trip pedestrians and even cause head or other bodily injuries."
He urges the public to stay alert and promptly report any unusual situations to the local authorities so that necessary measures can be taken.
He gave examples such as water pipe leakage, road surface sinking, or roadside trees tilting, which should be immediately reported through the local city council's electronic complaint system (e-Aduan).
He said that this is not only about fulfilling civic responsibility, but also could save lives. If everyone starts providing information, the authorities can check in a timely manner and prevent accidents from happening.
He also mentioned that when walking in urban areas, the public should try to walk within the five-foot way beneath buildings, as building piles extend into the five-foot way area, making it relatively safer.
"The area outside the five-foot way lacks pile support, and underground water pipes are distributed there, so the sinkhole risk increases. However, the five-foot ways are often occupied with tables, chairs and other objects."
"In fact, according to city council regulations, no objects should be placed on the five-foot way as it is a walkway. Therefore, we must return to basics—the walkway must remain clear and unobstructed."
