73-year-old Kent Cheng once rose to fame with the "Fat Cat" series, winning the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor twice. However, in 1993, he fell into a financial crisis due to failed investments, accumulating debts of 17 million HKD (approximately 9.72 million MYR). He had no choice but to sell his car and house, moving into a slum for over a decade. Fortunately, his friend Andy Lau (referred to as Lau) extended a helping hand during this difficult time, an act for which Cheng remains immensely grateful, stating he will "never forget his kindness for a lifetime."
At the peak of his career, Cheng co-founded a film company with friends, but mismanagement led to financial trouble and massive debts, forcing him to sell his villa and move into a slum with his family, beginning a long journey to repay his debts. During the toughest period of his life, many friends distanced themselves from him, but Lau was the exception. Not only did Lau lend him money, but he also frequently invited him to participate in film projects, helping him earn a living for his family. He gratefully said, "I will never forget his (Andy Lau's) kindness in my life." In 2017, Cheng and Lau collaborated on "Chasing the Dragon," and in 2024, they will reunite for the disaster film "City on Fire."
Nowadays, Cheng has finally relieved himself of debt burdens, although he still cannot completely let go of his worries. His wife, Lamy Chin, has required expensive medical care due to a serious illness in recent years, prompting Cheng to keep acting to support the family financially. Fortunately, his wife's condition has gradually stabilized, and the couple can enjoy walks together, with their affection as strong as ever.
