Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar pointed out that the meaningful exchanges held with partners during the 47th ASEAN Summit and related summits must go beyond paper agreements. At the same time, Malaysia will closely supervise the implementation of these agreements to ensure that the people benefit.
He posted on social media today (28th) saying that Malaysia will ensure its people benefit from trade access, while also safeguarding national interests and autonomy.
“Our position will continue to be rooted in the principles of peace, prosperity, and integrity, moving forward hand in hand with friendly nations and neighbors.”
“We will jointly chart a path that both upholds tradition and embraces the future, further benefiting the people of our nation and all ASEAN countries.”
Anwar mentioned that the visit by U.S. President Trump to Malaysia marks a longstanding relationship between Putrajaya and Washington, and reaffirms both sides’ shared commitment to regional peace and prosperity.
“Our meeting was based on mutual respect for shared interests, aimed at rebooting trade dialogues, boosting cooperation in supply chain and critical minerals, and reaffirming ASEAN’s central role in shaping the cooperation framework in the Asia-Pacific.”
Trump is the third U.S. president in history to visit Malaysia, with the previous two being Johnson in 1966, and Obama who visited Malaysia twice in 2014 and 2015.
He said that this visit is not an endorsement of any bloc of power, but rather demonstrates Malaysia’s role as a neutral, reliable, and efficient partner.
“Connecting economies, fostering dialogue, and maintaining regional stability. The signing of the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement between Cambodia and Thailand is a concrete example of how our strategic diplomacy is adding value to the region.”
