A thrilling home accident occurred in Colaba, Mumbai, India. On the 2nd, a residential building experienced a balloon explosion incident. A deliveryman brought more than a dozen hydrogen-filled balloons into an elevator, only for the balloons to inexplicably explode and shoot out a massive fireball, causing a 21-year-old female student, who was about to visit family, to suffer burns inside the elevator. The local police later intervened to investigate and formally charged the shop owner concerned with negligence.

The incident took place at Amour Apartment in the Colaba West district. According to reports, the deliveryman, Mahato, was carrying about 10 to 12 balloons filled with hydrogen, preparing to decorate a birthday party for a resident surnamed Jain. While the elevator was in operation, the balloons suddenly exploded violently, and the confined space of the elevator was instantly engulfed in fire, resembling an oven.

At the same time, 21-year-old student Thaparia, who was also in the elevator, was unfortunately caught up in the incident, suffering burns to her right arm, neck, and abdomen; the deliveryman Mahato was also injured in the accident.

Hydrogen is Highly Flammable and Extremely Dangerous

India Today reported that the balloons involved were filled with highly flammable hydrogen gas. Due to the extremely unstable properties of hydrogen, even the slightest static electricity, friction, or a weak spark can trigger a violent explosion. The local government has repeatedly issued warnings, strictly prohibiting the transport of hydrogen balloons in closed spaces like elevators with poor air circulation.

In fact, similar accidents are common worldwide because hydrogen is much cheaper than the inert gas helium, leading many businesses to use it illegally.

Police Charge Shop Owner with Negligence; Injured Parties Seek Compensation

Colaba Police Station stated that it has officially notified shop owner Jaiswal under the relevant negligence provisions of the Indian Penal Code. The investigation indicated that the owner failed to provide the deliveryman with any safety instructions or equipment when handing over the goods, nor did he inform him of the balloons' potential risk of explosion, reflecting serious administrative negligence.

The injured female student Thaparia, who hails from Surat, had just arrived at the building to visit family at the time of the incident. She has filed an official complaint with the police, alleging carelessness by Mahato's employer. Police confirmed that the injured parties are now out of life-threatening danger and have received appropriate medical care. The case is currently under further investigation according to legal procedures.
