Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán said on the 8th that the EU's admission of Ukraine into the Union would mean going to war with Russia, and that the EU is preparing for war with 2030 as the target date.
He pointed this out in a post on social media. However, he did not provide any evidence that the EU is preparing for war. Orbán has previously opposed Ukraine's accession to the EU multiple times.
In his post, Orbán wrote: "Dark clouds are looming over Europe; Brussels is preparing for war with Russia, and a target date for involvement has already been set: 2030. The armament plan initiated by Brussels has a clear goal: to make the EU ready for war by 2030, which is also the accelerated target date for admitting Ukraine into the EU."
Orbán said that, according to relevant EU treaties, if the territory of a member state is attacked, other member states are obligated to provide all available assistance to the best of their ability. "Therefore, admitting Ukraine—which is currently at war—into the EU would immediately draw the EU into the conflict."
Hungary is a member of both the EU and NATO. The Orbán government has expressed doubts over the EU providing military aid to Ukraine and has also opposed Ukraine’s admission to the EU. In October of this year, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó stated that Hungary would not allow negotiations for Ukraine’s accession to the EU to begin, as this would pose a threat to the European continent.
