(Kuching, 17th) Sarawak will continue to be a major contributor to the national economy, especially by driving the development of high-value industrial chains through the new economy by 2030.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari stated that the Sarawak government has vigorously developed renewable resources such as hydropower, hydrogen energy, and solar energy, making Sarawak the driving force of clean energy in the nation.
"With this advantage, Sarawak is now renowned as the 'Battery of ASEAN', not only supplying electricity to Sarawakians, but also providing energy to neighboring Kalimantan. We will further expand electricity supply to Singapore, Brunei, and even other Southeast Asian countries."
He made these remarks last night while addressing the crowd at the 2025 Sarawak-level Malaysia Day celebration rally held at the old Bintulu Airport.
Abang Johari pointed out that this year’s celebration theme, "Sarawak's Prosperity and Progress in Malaysia," is very much in line with Sarawak’s current reality, as Sarawak has now become one of Malaysia’s largest economies and has been recognized by the World Bank as a high-income economy since 2022.
He said that as Malaysia assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship this year, Sarawak is ready to play its role as a strategic gateway to Borneo and Southeast Asia, not only in the economic sector but also encompassing culture, education, and regional cooperation.
"Our goal is very clear, which is to make Sarawak an advanced and sustainable region, aiming to achieve 'net-zero emissions' by 2050. I have also launched the Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030, serving as a guide to ensure harmonious development of the economy, society, and environment, in order to create a sustainable future."
In terms of digital technology, the Premier of Sarawak stated that Sarawak is proud that a local team has successfully developed the world’s first AI-based power converter—KETEQ AI, which is the result of collaboration between Sarawak Microelectronics Design (SMD) and UK-based CSA Catapult.
In the aviation sector, he noted that Sarawak will see the rise of a regional aviation hub by 2026, when AirBorneo will commence operations, further strengthening the Asian regional aviation network and promoting development in trade and tourism.
