36-year-old Hong Kong star Coffee Lam possesses a sweet appearance and a sizzling figure, and was once hailed as the “Hong Kong version of Yaoyao.” However, in 2014, she was caught in a scandal after meeting a wealthy heir for 30 minutes in a mall’s accessible restroom. The entire encounter, including conversations and sounds, was recorded, severely damaging her image and causing her acting career to plummet. Recently, during a media interview, she fully revealed the truth behind the incident for the first time.
Coffee honestly admitted that at the time, she was heartbroken and tried to drown her sorrows in alcohol. After getting drunk, she entered a disabled restroom to vomit, but as soon as she walked out, she was surrounded by a large number of media. Soon after, she received notification from TVB terminating her contract. She recalled the day she went to terminate the contract, describing the scene as straight out of a movie: while taking a taxi, she was tailed by over 10 news vehicles, with reporters running red lights and crossing double white lines to get photos. Thankfully, the taxi driver acted heroically—he turned off the meter and performed daring maneuvers to shake off the media, eventually taking her to Lo Wu checkpoint. After paying the last HK$480 (about RM250) she had, she managed to take the subway and finally lost the press.
Speaking about the process of contract termination, Coffee said that the executive, Virginia Lok, was cold throughout. The meeting lasted less than 30 minutes before Lok bluntly said, “No one dares to use you now. There’s no point keeping you.” She then handed Coffee a HK$24,000 (about RM12,000) check, ending the collaboration. Physically and emotionally drained, Coffee developed scleroderma due to excessive pressure, and white patches broke out all over her body. Even when facing such a low point, she did not give up. On a friend’s suggestion, she taught herself video editing and subtitle production, then pivoted to sharing yoga tutorials. With her approachable style, she made a successful comeback: her YouTube channel now exceeds a million subscribers and she has established her own brand. Recently, when her friend Bob Lam invited her to return to TVB for a program recording, she decisively declined and boldly stated, “Since you didn’t want me before, I won’t come back now.”#
