Han Kuo-yu, President of Taiwan's Legislative Yuan, led a delegation of 19 people to depart for the United States on the evening of the 21st, including 7 cross-party legislators.
Before departing at Taoyuan International Airport, Han Kuo-yu stated that the primary goal is to exchange views with US lawmakers on Taiwan’s security, constituency governance, and whether the future can deepen cooperation and communication between the legislative bodies of Taiwan and the US, in order to strengthen ties between the two legislatures.
Han Kuo-yu stated that this visit to the US carries four important missions. The first is to deepen legislative exchanges and cooperation between Taiwan and the US. The second is to express sincere congratulations to the United States as it approaches its 250th anniversary. The third is to return to Taiwan on the inaugural nonstop Washington-Taipei flight to witness a major milestone. The fourth is to visit TSMC’s facilities in the US and interact with employees. He emphasized the need to use the most united delegation to let the world better understand Taiwan.
A Rare Senate-led Schedule in Washington
Taiwanese media noted that this visit by Han Kuo-yu was initiated with a direct invitation from the US Senate, with the main arrangements overseen by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Armed Services Committee. It is very rare for a Washington trip to be led by the Senate. Analysts believe that the high-profile invitation from the US aims to establish a direct communication channel with Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan, having noticed the current legislative situation in Taiwan, it is thought more effective to engage directly with the legislature. The main political focus remains on Taiwan-US military and drone industry cooperation, and whoever can best handle these issues will be the main point of contact.
