The new Korean drama "The Tyrant's Chef," starring Girls’ Generation member Yoona and rising actor Lee Chae Min, recently premiered but has already drawn criticism from viewers due to a Chinese character error in the show. In a key scene, a banner that was supposed to display the idiom "太平圣代" (meaning "age of peace and prosperity") instead mistakenly showed "太平圣大"—the production team has since released a statement apologizing for this error.
The controversy occurred in episode 1 of "The Tyrant's Chef," during a scene where Yoona's chef character time-travels to the Joseon era and meets Lee Chae Min's king. On the banner behind them, the phrase symbolizing the rule of a wise monarch, "太平圣代," had its last character "代" (era) incorrectly replaced with "大" (big). After the episode aired, sharp-eyed viewers quickly noticed and criticized the mistake, leaving comments such as: "Using the wrong Chinese characters in a historical drama is absurd," "Totally ruins the immersion," and "For a second I thought it referred to Taiping Saint University."
Since "The Tyrant's Chef" is being simulcast on Netflix to 190 countries worldwide, many Korean netizens commented that it was "an embarrassment spread overseas." In response, the production team urgently issued a statement on the 25th, publicly apologizing for this error and promising that a corrected version would be uploaded. They also pledged to be more careful with their production and review processes.
