Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar pointed out that the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement signed by Thailand and Cambodia serves as a profound reminder to the world that peace is never a given, and urged member economies at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to remain attentive to ongoing events in Gaza and Ukraine.
Representing Malaysia at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Dialogue with Guests today, he reiterated that regional-level dialogue and cooperation are not only beneficial, but are also indispensable.
“The Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement between Thailand and Cambodia reminds us that without trust, patience, and sustained negotiation, neither peace nor prosperity can endure. The same principle should also be applied to Gaza and Ukraine—for only solutions rooted in dialogue, not violence, pave the true way to peace.
“APEC has proven itself a pioneer in promoting an open spirit, upholding moral responsibility, and, based on voluntary cooperation rather than coercion, introducing global economic standards.”
“So it is with prosperity; both (peace and prosperity) must be nurtured and sustained through dialogue and trust.”
Malaysia played a key role in facilitating the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, an effort that was not only recognized by the United States and ASEAN member states, but continues to receive praise.
U.S. President Donald Trump continued to commend Malaysia’s outstanding leadership in mediating the Cambodian-Thai peace accord during his visit to Gyeongju on Wednesday.
In a special speech at the APEC CEO Summit, Trump noted that, with Malaysia’s assistance, this milestone peace agreement was successfully signed last Sunday during the 47th ASEAN Summit and related meetings held in Kuala Lumpur.
The Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement was signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, with Trump and Anwar signing as witnesses.
