North Korea Fires Multiple Rockets Amid Korea-China Summit and South Korea-US Defense Ministers' Inspection of Panmunjom

North Korea launched multiple rockets as South Korea and China held a summit and the South Korean and US defense ministers jointly inspected the Joint Security Area of Panmunjom on the inter-Korean border.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on the 4th that the military detected North Korea firing over ten rockets each toward the northwestern waters of the Korean Peninsula around 3 p.m. on the 1st and 4 p.m. on the 3rd.

The South Korean military speculates that all the rockets launched by North Korea were 240mm long-range rockets capable of reaching the Seoul metropolitan area.

The timing of North Korea's launches was about 30 minutes before South Korean President Lee Jae-myung met Chinese President Xi Jinping at the National Gyeongju Museum, and about 30 minutes before US Secretary of War Hagseth arrived by helicopter at Camp Bonifas, a US military base in South Korea.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea stated that the South Korean and US intelligence agencies are closely analyzing the specific parameters of the rockets North Korea launched. The military is closely monitoring North Korea’s actions based on a strong South Korea-US joint defense posture, while maintaining the ability and readiness to deter any provocation.
