The Tsunami Warning Center of China’s Ministry of Natural Resources has issued a yellow tsunami alert. At 7:24 am on July 30, 2025, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck the offshore region east of Kamchatka (52.53°N, 160.16°E), with a depth of 20 km (earthquake parameters revised).
According to the latest monitoring and analysis by the Tsunami Warning Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, this earthquake has already triggered a tsunami. It is expected to have damaging effects on the coasts of Shanghai, southern Zhoushan, east of Taipei, west of Pingtung, east of Pingtung, southeast of Taitung, northeast of Taitung, Hualien, and Yilan in China.
As of 11 am, real-time monitoring results from the Tsunami Warning Center show that tsunami buoys near the epicenter have detected 90-centimeter tsunami waves, while coastlines of Japan and Russia have observed tsunami waves ranging from 30 to 50 centimeters.
The tsunami is expected to reach the coast of Taiwan at around 1:30 pm, and will subsequently arrive at the coastal waters of Zhejiang and Shanghai between 5 pm and 8 pm. The predicted maximum wave heights are 60 centimeters for eastern Taiwan, 40 centimeters for northern Zhejiang, and 30 centimeters for Shanghai.
